Escort Industry, a constant sense of amusement.

Escort Industry, a constant sense of amusement.

The escort industry provides a constant sense of amusement for me. From a business perspective, there are two principles that guarantee said amusement: one being the concept behind the book, “Who Moved My Cheese?” and the other being the marketing concept of the “bandwagon effect ”. In the last six years, the escort industry has undergone massive changes and it is my observation that the majority have been blind to it. We are seeing a greater separation between provider groups by their standards, policies and social class more than anything else.

You have those who primarily venue of interaction is Craigslist and Backpage;

sites in which the belief of instant gratification with minimal effort is predominant. This translates to virtually no screening and a phone number to instantly call. Many would-be clients love to troll these pages looking for a “gem”, a newbie who doesn’t know what she’s doing and is under priced. Let’s not pretend otherwise; I’m sure many of you know exactly what I’m talking about both overtly and implied. If you were to ask most of the providers today the how’s and why of pricing, they couldn’t tell you. They’ve been doing what they see others do. When you see a provider whose in-call price is cheaper than her out-call price, chances are she is “probably” doing in-calls in her home/apartment.

Think about this for a moment, you are going to see someone at his or her home or apartment where she commonly sees other clients. Do you really think some neighbor doesn’t notice the traffic over time? In the majority of escort busts, two things are very prevalent: Drugs (in some way, shape, or form) and a permanent in-call location.

When I say permanent in-call locations, I mean the same location more than seven to ten days in a row. I personally know of a few agencies that have rented apartments for business however, here’s what you may not know: The majority of those agencies eventually have problems. I can make a multitude of logical reasons why but, I’ll stick to one for now. All it takes is one associate or client with issues to make a phone call. Need I say more? At this juncture I am obligated to point out a simple disclaimer “you’re market dynamics may be different”.

As for “Who Moved My Cheese?“, that’s an easy one. Not that most of you gentlemen or ladies (yes, I have female clients) would notice but, escort directories are going out of business at a significant rate. Everyday, my mailbox is full of directory invites for us to join and add our associates. However, three to six months later, the sites are gone. What these would-be directory owners (many of them hobbyists hoping to get free trades) didn’t grasp was the fundamental industry shift away from agencies who have been, and still are, the backbone of this business to independents. This trend, which is only recently starting to reverse itself, has caused many problems (a subject for another rant) . One of which, was the lowering of industry standards which many poorly run agencies fed into as well. A well-run agency is a bu siness; independents ( as a psychological group thought process) tend not to think of it in these terms as a “first” thought. Generally speaking, agencies will pay for advertising, whereas independents generally will not. If this generalization of a mode of thought were not true at a basic level, then those “free escort web sites” wouldn’t be so popular. Nor would be trade off’s or “in trade” to directory owners for premium banner placement be so common. For those of you who didn’t know this sorry to burst your bubble but too many providers and directory owners have to brag to someone. Yes, there are women who are fantastic business people in this business and their marketing actions tend to mimic well run agencies. Which is probably why they are out performing many of their competitors still on “free” sites. Of course, we all know I’m not talking about all independents. There are agency owners who run their businesses poorly and are also on free web sites and have low standards.

The fact remains, our industry is highly competitive (probably more so than most) and like every other profession, we have those who pay attention and those who don’t. Those who don’t will eventually be like the Gazelle at the African watering hole who’s oblivious to the stalking cheetah. Of course most of us watched Marlin Perkins Wild Kingdom growing up and we know how that usually ends…….  and I’m not talking about the commercial break to Mutual of Omaha

Be well and be good to each other.
